San Diego International Wine Show: A Blend Of Culture, Unique Wines, and Wine Education Seminars In The Del Mar Paddock At The Del Mar Fairgrounds

It’s no surprise that great wines come from European countries, but it may be shocking to learn that the Vatican City in Italy ranks as the highest country for wine consumption in Europe, according to The Wine Institute of California.

They apparently drink more than one and a half times as much wine per person as any other country in the world. Italy, itself, ranks 11th on the list and the United States ranks 56th on that same list for the year 2012–drinking 10.42 liters, slightly under 14 bottles, per capita.

Italian-born Donato Santarsieri is the Executive Director of the San Diego International Wine Show and comes from a long history of family winemakers in Italy. Santarsieri hopes to introduce San Diego wine consumers to the international flavors of wine from around the globe at his upcoming show on April 26 & 27, 2014 beginning at 1 p.m. in the Del Mar Paddock at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

“The public here is generally quite California-centric about their taste in wine, but when they travel abroad and experience these fantastic wines they’re discovering that they really like them,” says Santarsieri.

But the problem is many people don’t know how or where to find the wines that they experienced overseas. “I saw this as a great opportunity to bring in international wines, winemakers, and top sommeliers to let consumers taste and learn more about what makes these wines so special,” says Santarsieri.

The two-day wine lovers extravaganza will feature international wines from Italy, Spain, France, Chile and Argentina, and, even closer to home, Baja Wines from the Guadalupe Valley region of Baja California, Mexico. It’s an emerging market and wine country that several years ago had fewer than 10 wineries. Today, there are 93 wineries in Baja.

Certified Sommeliers Charlie Plummer of Jackson Family Fine Wines and Hilarie Larson (Certified Specialist Of Wine 2012) will give educational talks and question and answer sessions including seminars on “Blind Tasting Secrets Of The Sommelier” and There’s No Place Like Rhone”. Frances Rhone Valley is famous for the popularity of Rhone Varieties from this ancient region.

The San Diego International Wine Show will feature live acoustic music from Jimmy and Enrique, a soulful blend of jazz, R&B, and classic rock from Susan McCrea with Soul Seduction. Cooking demonstrations from Guatemala-born Chef Pablo A. Fernandez whose style of cuisine is enriched by his living and experiencing cultures abroad in places such as Spain, Thailand, and Guatemala. He currently lives in San Diego and is the founder/producer of The Secret Table, a movement to bring community around real food and true relationships.
