No better way to teach students about writing, journalism, broadcasting, marketing, and technology than with a Student-Run, written, and produced TV Newscast filmed and edited by Live Fit Films. They did a fantastic job!

Authors, Illustrators, and Journalists (AIJ) Academy Students at Walker Elementary School in San Diego, California create a Channel 45 Newscast celebrating National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America and NEA’s sponsor Renaissance Dental. Explore how afterschool literacy, tutoring sessions help to encourage a diverse group of motivated students, some of whom are English Learners , to create a newscast filled with weather , traffic, a commercial, and author interviews! AIJ Academy Advisor and NBCT Grace Nall teaches students how literacy and technology can support the Common Core Standards. With the help of guest children’s book authors and award-winning journalist and entrepreneur, Phoebe Chongchua of Live Fit Films, the students learn how literacy is important in many careers.

Academy students are reminded of a quote from San Diego Unified School District’s Superintendent Cindy Marten, “Be Kind. Work Hard. Dream Big! No Excuses.” This newscast wouldn’t have been possible for the help of many people. Thank you for believing students can make a difference.
